Gladys Dixon Luther

Gladys Dixon Luther was a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother who died after a brief illness at Brookridge Retirement Community on September 22, 2008 after 107 wonderful years of life. She was born to Edgar Dixon and Elizabeth Stalcup Dixon on December 16, 1900 in Morganton. Mrs. Luther graduated from Morganton High School, Yancy Collegiate Institute in Burnsville and Draughns Business School in Winston-Salem. She was employed by Dun Bradstreet Mercantile Co. for a number of years. On June 14, 1924 she was married to Marion Elmer Luther, who was a partner at Hinkle's Book Store in Winston-Salem. He preceded her in death in 1980. Mrs. Luther made her home at Hayes Home, then Brookridge Retirement Community since 1985. Mr. and Mrs. Luther did extensive traveling in the US and abroad. She loved Ardmore Baptist Church, where she was the oldest living member, and had been very active while able. Even after she moved to Brookridge Retirement Community she was active in their Senior Citizens group until she was about 100. Many were amazed at her incredible memory and she was a wonderful role model for all her family. Mrs. Luther was even recognized by Willard Scott on Dec. 16, 2007 on NBC Today Show. She is survived by two daughters, Martha L. Shelton (John) of Winston-Salem, Elizabeth L. Schultz (Thomas, deceased) of Wilmington. She has six grandchildren, Rebecca S. Jensen (Harold) of Mooresville, Dr. John A. Shelton, Jr. (Yvonne) of Ormond Beach, FL, Laura S. Smith (Andrew) of Mooresville, Lynne S. Lewis (Kendall) of Wilmington, Mary Beth S. Chalk (Greg) of Charleston, SC and Thomas L. Schultz (Margaret) of Hickory. She had fourteen great grandchildren that were the light of her life. The family would like to extend their appreciation to members of the Brookridge staff that were so attentive and caring to Mrs. Luther, especially those on 6th East, including Julia, Dolly, Annie, Gina, Cindy, Phyllis and many others. A graveside service will be held at Forsyth Memorial Park at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, September 25th, and a memorial service will follow at 2:30 p.m. at Brookridge in Feezer Auditorium. It will be conducted by Dr. Ray Benfield and Rev. Christa Warise.
