Gilbert Thomas Davis, Sr.

Mr. Gilbert T. Davis, Sr., 88, died Monday, June 15, 2009 at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home after several years of declining health. He was born March 6, 1921 to William T. and Leza Bullard Davis who preceded him in death. He attended Clemmons School graduating in 1939. He worked several jobs prior to working for National Carbon Company during World War II. He retired from the Forsyth County Health Department December 31, 1983 after 38 years as a Registered Sanitarian. During those years, he was awarded Sanitarian of the year and was President of the Area Sanitarian Organization. In February 1985, he began a new position as inspector of all Libby Hill Seafood Restaurants, a position he held for 16 years until his health failed. He was an active member of Clemmons First Baptist Church serving in many areas: deacon, department leader and various committees. He enjoyed many sports activities and especially enjoyed the New York Yankees from school age until present. He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Melba, and children Mona Jones (Jack) of Winston-Salem, Gilbert T. Davis, Jr. (Brenda) of Advance, Donna Keylon of Raleigh, and Rebecca Norman of Winston-Salem; six grandchildren Ginger Bryan (Dolph) of Durham, Deborah Arnold (Andy) of Greensboro, Michael Best (Jane) of Copenhagen, Denmark, Lee Norman (Heather) of Clemmons, Jessica Dean (Joe) of Round Rock , TX; Justin Davis of Advance; six great granddaughters and finally a great grandson expected in August. A funeral service will be conducted 11:00 am Wednesday at Clemmons First Baptist Church with the Dr. Robby Phillips officiating. Entombment will follow at Westlawn Gardens of Memory Mausoleum. The family will receive friends from 9:30am - 10:45 am prior to the service at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Clemmons First Baptist Church, P.O Box 279, Clemmons, NC 27012 or to Hospice and Palliative Care Center, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, NC 27103.
