Gilbert "Bert" Leo Brandon

Advance Mr. Gilbert ""Bert"" Leo Brandon of Advance, NC, passed away Thursday, May 15, 2014 due to more than a year of declining health. He died at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. Gilbert was born in Forsyth County on October 18, 1934 to William Franklin and Lucinda Lawrence Brandon. Gilbert spent his youth and much of his adult life in the community of Clemmons where he graduated from Clemmons High School. He left the family farm, and proudly joined the Armed Services from 1955-1957, but returned to his beloved family and community to earn his livelihood and establish himself in the community. He often reminisced about the childhood memories he shared with his large family which included 9 brothers and 5 sisters. Being a member of such a large farming family he learned to work hard, but along with his work ethic, Bert developed a keen sense of humor which served him well, and has endeared him to all whoever had the good fortune to know him, either as a family member, neighbor, or co-worker. His ability to stir laughter and endearment knew no bounds. He would go to great lengths to pull a joke or prank, but always with the friendliest and warmest intentions. His compassion and generosity knew no bounds. He encouraged, mentored, and consoled anyone who suffered. Bert retired from AT&T with 34 years of service and also worked at Black Box Communications formerly Todd Communications for 21 years. He loved gardening, traveling, and spending time with his beloved extended family, close friends, and neighbors. Gilbert was heavily involved in community service through his membership in the Advance Masonic Lodge #710, Davie Civitan Club, and the community churches. He was a man of devout Christian faith and a member of Green Meadows Baptist Church but was currently attending Advance First Baptist Church. Preceding him in death were his parents, 3 sisters, and 6 brothers. Surviving is his wife of more than 50 years, Willa Burchette Brandon; daughter, Benita Lynn Finney (Jeff); son, Johnny Brian Brandon (Bridgette); 5 grandchildren, Austin, Amber, Bradon, Brandee, and Brian; 2 sisters, Betty Alexander (Herbert) and Linda Massengill (Don); 3 brothers, Bill Brandon (Yvonne), Larry Brandon (Carolyn), and Wayne Brandon (Gwenda); also surviving are countless nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was a loving son, husband, father, uncle, and grandfather, who dedicated his efforts always to the ""better good"" of home, community and world. He will be missed, but always remembered with the greatest of love and devotion. A funeral service will be held 3:00 PM Saturday, May 17, 2014 at Hayworth-Miller Kinderton Chapel with Rev.
