Our beloved "Granny", Gertrude Therese Maerkl Carter, age 83 of Winston-Salem, passed away on Friday, November 12, 2010 at the Lutheran Home. She was born on June 17, 1927 in Wetstetten, Ingolstadt, Germany to Johan and Therese Reinhard Maerkl. She was predeceased by her husband of 60 years, George McCollum Carter who died in 2006, whom she met and married when he was stationed in Munich, Germany during World War II. She was also predeceased by her son, George Maerkl Carter who died in 1993 and her sister Emma and brothers Hans and Max of Ingolstadt, Germany. She is survived by her daughter Evelyn and husband Dr. Michael Pollak; five grandchildren, Kristin C. Russell and husband Chuck, Ned Cain and his wife, Dr. Deborah Kirby-Cain, Christopher D. Cain, Natalie and Candy Carter; eight great-grandchildren, Christian Russell, Nicholas and Benjamin Cain, Dillion, Cameron, Miya, Jorrdan and Latiana Carter. She is also survived by several loving nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews in Ingolstadt and Munich. Granny was of the Catholic faith and was a nurturer of all things. These included her cherished family, her beautiful plants and flower beds she so lovingly tended, and her neighbors and friends. She was a gourmet cook and loved to read her Bon App�tit and Southern Living Magazines to discover delicious recipes to tempt us with. Her love was truly unconditional. "Granny- You were always there for each and everyone of us. You will live in our hearts forever and we will miss you forever!" There will be a private family celebration of her life. Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel is assisting the family. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 122 N. Elm St., suite 800, Greensboro, NC 27401. The family wishes to express their sincere appreciation to the nursing staff and management of The Lutheran Home for their concerned and loving care of Gertrude.
