Gerald Oversen, 82 passed away on August 30, 2021 at Novant Medical Center Hospital in Kernersville, North Carolina. He was born April 3, 1939 in Chicago Illinois.
He joined the US Navy shortly after high school where he traveled the world. While stationed in Newfoundland, Canada, he met, through a blind date and later married my mother Angela White. They were married happily for 56 years until her death in June of this year. He leaves behind three children, Margaret Mary (Randall Crewz), Gerald Patrick and Michael Sean (Darline Miller), seven grand-children, Danielle Crewz, Lauren Crewz, Daniel, Amanda, Erica, Joshua and Alex, four great grand-children, twins Amelia and Isabella, Sophia and Reid.
Gerald had a long 22 year career in the US Navy where he served three tours to Vietnam. After retiring he moved back to the Chicago area where he worked for the General Binding Corporation for 20 years until retirement.
He loved his family and was a wonderful grandparent who lived for his grandchildren. He loved reading, museums, art and classical music and often shared his passions with his grand-children with trips to the bookstore or museums in the city.
A graveside service will be held at 1:00 PM, Friday, September 10, 2021 at Salisbury National Cemetery.
His family would like to mention that “as our father was a rare COVID breakthrough casualty, we would like to remind everyone to get vaccinated and to wear masks around the most vulnerable members of our society".
In lieu of flowers please consider making a donation to the Wounded Warrior Project in Gerald’s name. He was an ardent supporter of Veterans groups and recognized their support needs. Hayworth-Miller Kernersville Chapel is assisting the family.
