Gerald "Jerry" Eggers, MD

Gerald Wood (Jerry) Eggers, born in New Orleans, LA, native of Mobile and long-time citizen/ physician of Winston-Salem, NC, died July 19, 2016 after a brief illness in the loving care of his family and Hospice of Winston-Salem. Jerry was a graduate of both the undergrad and medical school programs at the University of South Alabama in Mobile, AL. Inducted as an honorary member of Alpha Omega Alpha after ïnishing second in his med school class, he received countless awards for excellence, many in his chosen ïeld of pathology. He did a 3-year resi-dency program in pathology at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, TN, where he was awarded the Tumor Fellowship and completed his residency as chief resident at South Alabama Medical Center. Upon ïnishing his training, he worked for eight years at Springhill Memorial Hospital in. Mobile until he was asked to take a position at Forsyth Memorial Hospital in Winston-Salem, NC, where he relocated, worked and resided with his family the last 25 years. He served diligently as chief of staff at Forsyth Memorial Hospital for a time, was highly involved in medical policy, quality control, and was committed to leaving a legacy of excellence in patient care through active personal and professional involvement with his fellow physicians at Forsyth Hospital and the department of pathology. Jerry was an avid golfer, his passion reï‚ected in memberships over the years at Forsyth, Old North State and Bermuda Run Country Clubs. He was quietly and anonymously a generous supporter of many charitable organizations over the years too numerous and varied to denote here. Of all his passions, family came ïrst; he was preceded in death by his mother, Dorothy Jordan Eggers and is survived by his father, Dr. Earl M. Eggers, his wife, Charlotte McDonough Eggers, and children: Jimmy Eggers (Misty), Daniel Eggers (Jennifer), Audrey Eggers Thompson (John Mark), Thomas Jordan (T.J.) Eggers and ""adopted son"", Peter Speziale (Meg); six grandchildren: Cassidy and Austin Eggers, Elizabeth Louise (Ibby) and Chloe Anne Eggers, Charlotte Everette (Evy) and Anna Kate Thompson. He also is survived by the following siblings residing mostly in and around Mobile, AL: Larry Eggers, Dennis Eggers, Billy Eggers, Jeannie Eggers Scott, Allan Eggers, Julie Eggers Martin and Joy Eggers Levens.
