Gerald Britton Harper

Mr. Gerald Britton Harper, 77, passed away unexpectedly February 9, 2009 at home. He was born March 31, 1931 in Springfield, Tennessee to the late Cecil D. and Ruby S. Harper. He spent his childhood and youth in Hartsville, Tennessee, later attended the University of the South and then joined the U.S. Navy serving during the Korean conflict. Mr. Harper completed his education earning a BS.degree in electrical engineering from Tennessee Technological University in 1959. His 35 year career was spent working for Western Electric, Inc. and AT&T Technologies in a variety of locations both domestically and abroad. He was active in many service organizations including the Hartsville, Tennessee Masonic Lodge #113, as a 32 degree Scottish Rite Freemason and as a life member of the North American Shriners. He had a leadership role in the Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts of America for many years, especially with Troop 33 on the naval base in Yokosuka, Japan. Using his lifelong and wide ranging occupational experiences, Mr. Harper enjoyed helping and also teaching his co-workers, friends and family to repair, build and maintain just about anything. He is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Anne W. Harper of the home. Also surviving are two sons: G. Britton Harper, Jr., MD. and wife Jan of Charlotte, NC.; Terence D. Harper and wife Cynthia of Snellville, Ga. and daughter Melanie H. Moore, DVM. and husband Gary of Concord, NC. He has eight grandchildren: Timothy D. Moore, Patrick D. Moore, Eric M. Harper, Susan Winfree, G. Britton Harper III., William Cale Harper, George W. Harper and Margaret E. Harper. Visitation will be held at the home on Friday, February 13th from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm. Internment will follow at a later date in the Memorial Gardens of Hartsville, Tennessee. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Maple Springs United Methodist Church food pantry at 2569 Reynolda Road, Winston-Salem, NC. 27106.
