Mr. George Prentiss Sweat, 84, of Winston-Salem, NC, died on Sept. 5, 2010 at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. He was born April 1st, 1926 in Bennettsville, South Carolina to the late Willie K. and Helen Driggers Sweat. In addition to his parents, Prentiss was preceded in death by three brothers, Willie Howard, Billy Ray, and L.V. Sweat and one beloved sister, Doris White. The one surviving brother, David C. Sweat and wife Elsie paid frequent visits to Prentiss. The children are so very thankful for their visits which meant so much to him. Prentiss especially enjoyed the many motorcycle rides that he and David, along with his many other motorcycle friends, took to the Low Water Bridge at Rockford. Prentiss married the late Alma ""Pat"" Charlotte Hauser on Dec. 18, 1945. Prentiss and Alma have three surviving children, Judy Robertson, husband Ronald, George Sweat, wife Lenna, Janet Boger and husband Barney. In addition to his children, he leaves seven grandchildren and ten great grandchildren. After Alma's death in 2005, Prentiss married Edna Seagraves of Winston-Salem in 2006 who also attended his home church. Prentiss was a deacon and choir member at South Fork Baptist Church where he attended faithfully until his illness prevented him from doing so. He is also survived by Edna and two step-daughters, Vicky Lawrence and Donna Campbell, husband Dwain and three step-grandchildren. Prentiss retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company in 1986 after 34 years of service. Prentiss was one of the few remaining veterans of World War II, where he served as a Gunners Mate, 3rd Class, aboard the U.S.S. Midway (CVB 41) and on the LCI (L) 538. While serving on the LCI (L) 538, Prentiss participated in what historians have called the most monumental assault by an invading force ever conceived and more importantly, carried out, the D-Day Landing on June 6, 1944 at Normandy, France. Prentiss, at the age of 18, was involved in the landing on Omaha Beach that historic day in 1944. He was scheduled to participate in the Triad Flight of Honor on Oct. 30, 2010. Prentiss will be greatly missed and for his military service, he remains a hero in the eyes of his loved ones. The funeral service will be held 11:00 AM Wednesday, September 8, 2010 at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with Pastor Rick Sewell officiating. Interment will follow at Forsyth Memorial Park. The family will receive friends 6-8 PM Tuesday at the funeral home. The family would like to acknowledge with grateful appreciation the care and compassion shown by Dr. Patricia Zekan and her staff along with Dr. Card and staff at Winston-Salem HealthCare. The family would also like to thank Dr. Frederick Howell and his staff at Carolina Urological Assoc. for their patience and understanding during their treatment of Prentiss. In addition, the care and concern given to Prentiss by the nurses and staff at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home will long be remembered by his family.
