George Sayre Hoyt

Mr. George Sayre Hoyt, 80, passed away peacefully Wednesday, May 17, 2023. He was born April 17, 1943, to the late Richard Wilson Hoyt and Dorothy Corcoran Hoyt. 

In addition to his parents, George is predeceased by his son, Richard Wilson Hoyt II, and brother-in-law, Sam Vittitow. He is survived by his loving wife, Marie Hoyt; sister, Barbara Vittitow; and nieces and nephews. 

With an Industrial Engineering degree from Purdue University and a Masters of Business Administration degree from the University of Chicago, George enjoyed a distinguished career as a manufacturing company executive, serving at Sundstrand Corporation in Rockford, Illinois, Duracell Inc. in Lexington, North Carolina, and AMP, Inc. in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.

George’s devoted and deep faith in Christ not only anchored his life, but forged an other-centered heart that delighted in helping people find their purpose. He served as elder and part-time staff at Reynolda Church in Winston-Salem, where he crafted a comprehensive life-purpose inventory that helped hundreds discover their uniqueness. As part of the New Canaan Society fellowship, George led a ministry helping men in vocational transition – earning him the affectionate nickname “Job Doc.”

In addition to his intellectual acumen and organizational prowess, George spoke fluent Italian, was a talented guitarist and an avid bowler who once scored two points shy of a perfect game.

God’s grace was on beautiful display in George’s life as he endured his son’s death, was healed of a life-threatening cancer and valiantly battled an Alzheimer’s diagnosis for seven years. To the end, George’s heart was smitten with affection for Marie, the love of his life, to whom he proposed on their second date and adored for 56 years of marriage.

A Celebration of Life service will be held at 3:00 PM Saturday, June 10^th at Reynolda Church with Rev. Alan Wright officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the church.
