Mr. George H. Ellarby passed away peacefully at the age of 89 at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston Salem, NC. George was pre-deceased by his parents, George and Elizabeth Ellarby; four brothers, Jack, Henry, Albert and Eric; and one sister, Doll Hazzard. He is survived by his loving wife, June, of almost 70 years. He was a devoted father to Fred Ellarby (Cathie) and Jennifer Sloan (Norman); a loving grandfather to Colleen Ellarby, Devin Sloan (Danielle); and step-grandfather to Susan Sloan (David Frisco), Emily Hoody-Russell (Chris Russell), and Benjamin Sloan (Emily). He was lucky enough to be the great- grandfather to Liam Christopher Sloan (3 months). He was a very special uncle to Carole Herbertson (Don), Jocelyn Miller (Bill), and Marilyn Moxam as well as several other nieces and nephews. George also had a very close friend, Mary Baker, who was like a daughter to him. Also surviving are two sisters, Gladys Marvin and Frances Wells. He started his career as a draftsman with Northern Electric in Belleville, Ontario, Canada in 1947. In 1973, he furthered his career in public relations with Northern Telecom in Boston, MA. He went on to work in Nashville, TN and retired in Raleigh, NC from Nortel in 1998. Growing up in the Salvation Army, George learned how to play all the brass instruments, including the tuba and enjoyed singing for many years with the men's choir. All of the children in the family fondly remember George for creating his own words to every song, customizing them to include their names. He was always whistling or singing. Fred and Jenny never remember a quiet car ride! A memorial service will be held at 2:00pm on Friday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. Inurnment will follow in Canada. A visitation will follow the memorial service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Forsyth Humane Society, 61 Miller St. Winston-Salem, NC 27104.
