Mrs. Genevieve M. Yankus, 89, of Clemmons, passed away Sunday, October 30, 2011 at her home. She was born October 16, 1922 in Upton, Massachusetts to Joseph and Mary Kasprzak Sabacinski. Mrs. Yankus was a devoted and loving mother, Gramma and Babcia who always put her children first throughout her life. She was a member of the St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Guild and the crafters for the annual fall bazaar of Holy Family Catholic Church. She was a dedicated volunteer at Medical Park Hospital for many years and received the coveted Champion Volunteer Award. She took pride in her 40 years as a food service worker in hospitals, nursing homes and schools. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, George M. Yankus; six brothers, Walla, Johnny, Mike, Tony, Benny and Joe; and one sister, Josie. Surviving are twin daughters, Jean A. Borden (Michael) and June A. Steigel (Don); a son, Richard F. Cheney (Pat); her grandchildren, Donna J. Sloan (Scott), Diane M. Steigel, Jennifer Frank (Peter), Amanda Upton (Blake), Matthew Borden (Katie), Richard Cheney, and Keree Grosso; her great grandchildren, David and Michael Sloan, P.J. Frank, Sydney Upton, Kulin and Quinn Reynolds, and Tallulauh Cheney; a brother, Vitek Sabacinski; and a sister, Irene Johnson. A funeral mass will be held at 12:00 PM Wednesday, November 2, at Holy Family Catholic Church, 4820 Kinnamon Road, Winston-Salem, NC with Father Michael Buttner officiating. A private burial will follow. The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service.
