Mr. Gene Harris Greene, 83, died peacefully at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home on Wednesday, June 30, 2010. Mr. Greene was born on October 25, 1926 to Dr. and Mrs. G.V. Greene of Davie County. He was a faithful and active member of New Philadelphia Moravian Church of Winston-Salem. Gene served in the U.S. Navy in the Pacific during WWII. After returning from his service he attended and graduated from High Point College. Gene earned his Masters' Degree at East Carolina Teachers College in Greenville, NC. Mr. Greene started his career at South Fork High School teaching science. While there, he met and soon married the love of his life, Elizabeth Martin Greene and had 59 blessed years. He taught four years at South Fork and later retired in 1987 as a chemist at R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company. Mr. Greene was preceded in death by his brother, Garland ""Bob"" V. Greene, Jr. Surviving are his loving wife, Elizabeth; sisters, Lucy Hubbard, Carmen Price and Edrie Brunt. He leaves behind numerous Greene-Martin nephews, nieces, cousins and a host of New Philadelphia Moravian Church friends. One of Gene's favorite pastimes was creating treasures from wood and earned him the name ""Wizard of Wood"". Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Friday, July 2, 2010 at New Philadelphia Moravian Church with Dr. Worth Green officiating. Burial will follow in the church graveyard. The family will recieve friends following the service in the fellowship hall. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to New Philadelphia Moravian Church, 4440 Country Club Rd., Winston-Salem, NC 27104 or to the donor's choice.
