Gary Moore Bennett

Gary Moore Bennett of Walkertown, NC passed away peacefully at his home on April 26, 2023, with his loving wife of 56 years by his side.

Gary was born on October 27, 1946 in Forsyth County to Henry and Ruth Bennett. He graduated from East Forsyth High School in 1965 and attended Milligan College in Tennessee, where he played baseball. He was employed by Roadway Express and retired after 35 years of service. He was also a Heritage Member of Morris Chapel United Methodist Church.

Gary’s children were his whole world. He was so proud of his daughter, Jill. She was “daddy’s girl.” He loved to hear her play the violin. He encouraged her to learn when she was 7 years old. He never missed one her performances over the years.

Gary loved all sports, but baseball was his favorite. He was an amazing athlete. His love for sports led him to coaching his son in youth baseball and basketball. As John grew older, Gary was there for every game cheering him on. In turn, he loved to watch his grandsons play baseball and basketball. His favorite baseball team was the New York Yankees, and he was a die-hard Duke Blue Devil fan, attending many basketball games over the years.

Gary loved his grandchildren. He was so proud of Jake and Belle and the fine adults they have become. Jack and Gray are well on their way to being outstanding athletes just like “Papa Gary.”

Gary was preceded in death by his daughter, Martha Ellen and his parents, Henry and Ruth Bennett.

Surviving are his wife, Sheila of Walkertown; daughter Jill Martin (Todd) of Belews Creek; son John Bennett (Ashley) of Charlotte; his four grandchildren, Jake and Belle Martin and Jack and Gray Bennett; one brother Ronald Bennett (Johnita) of Walnut Cove; one sister Pamela Barton (Jim) of Staunton, Virginia; one sister-in-law Sharon Fernandini (Eddie) of Lexington; and several wonderful nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services will be held on Sunday, April 30^, 2023, at 3:00pm at Morris Chapel United Methodist Church in Walkertown, North Carolina. Reverend Jeff Coppley and Samantha Wesley will officiate. There will be a visitation from 2:00 pm until 2:45 pm prior to the service. Burial will follow the ceremony at the church cemetery. Hayworth-Miller Kernersville Chapel is assisting the family.
