Mr. Gary Wade Groce, 72, of Advance, passed away Thursday, December 20, 2012 at Wake Forest Baptist Health. He was born March 7, 1940 in Davie County to Lottie Renegar Groce and Wade Irvin Groce. Mr. Groce graduated from Davie High School in 1957 and later served in the National Guard. He received an Associate Degree in Electronics and worked for NCR, which lead him to his career in computers. Mr. Groce was a pioneer in the computer industry as early as the 1960's. He worked for several companies (as a software developer) such as Burlington Industries, R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company and more recently worked as a self employed computer consultant until he retired and went to work at Davie High School in the computer department until December of 2011. Mr. Groce was a member of Farmington Baptist Church who had many friends because of his generous and outgoing personality. At one time he was a private pilot who loved to fly and also enjoyed bluegrass music. He taught himself to play the banjo and enjoyed playing with local musicians. Mr. Groce was Co-Owner and President of Pudding Ridge Golf Course. Surviving are his wife of 44 years, Linda Williams Groce; one daughter, Amanda Tenery (Josh) of Advance; one son, Adam Groce (Jennifer) of Wilmington; three grandchildren, Emily Groce and Luke Tenery and Savannah Tenery; one brother, Earl Groce (Juanita) of Advance; one sister, Diana Vuich (Russ) of California and numerous nieces and nephews, who he was very close to. Also surviving are one great nephew and two great nieces. A funeral service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, December 29, 2012 at Farmington Baptist Church with Pastor Phillip Brande officiating. The family will receive friends following the service at the church.
