Fred Dean Shumate

Winston Salem-Fred Dean Shumate, 68, passed away Monday, May 17, 2010. He was born October 7, 1941 in Wilkes Co. to the late Clifford Guy and Lola Stone Shumate. Fred was a member of Gospel Light Baptist Church. He served in the United States Air Force, and retired from R.J. Reynolds after 30 years of service. He later was employed by Loomis Fargo for over 14 years and then Bud Services. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his foster parents, John and Ina Smith; and his son, Wayne Gillis. Surviving are his wife, Claudette Barnes Shumate of the home; his daughter, Carol Shumate of Kernersville; four grandchildren, Sheldon Shumate, Weston, Morgan and Matthew Gillis; and his brother, Rev. Frank Shumate and wife, Virginia of Kernersville. A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 am Friday, May 21, 2010 at Gospel Light Baptist Church with Dr. Bobby Roberson and Rev. Frank Shumate officiating. Burial will follow in Gardens of Memory in Walkertown. The family will receive friends from 6-8:00 pm Thursday, May 20, 2010 at Hayworth Miller Kernersville Chapel.
