Mr. Frank Lee Westmoreland of Winston-Salem passed away this 29th day of May, 2013, at Brighton Gardens of Winston-Salem after a period of declining health. Mr. Westmoreland was born in Statesville on June 26, 1929, to Capt. William M. Westmoreland and Mary Lee Austin Westmoreland. He was the youngest of their five children. Mr. Westmoreland graduated from Statesville High School and attended Mars Hill College. Afterwards, he was accepted into the U.S. Air Corps, but because of the onset of polio in his right arm, he was prevented from pursuing his flight training there. Encouraged by Mr. Tom Davis of Piedmont Airlines, Mr. Westmoreland trained and assumed a position as a flight dispatcher and later as a dispatch supervisor for Piedmont. He remained with the company his entire career. He loved to travel and spent much of his retirement seeing the world. He was dedicated to his church and for many years he served as a deacon at Ardmore Baptist Church, Winston-Salem. Mr. Westmoreland was never married, but was committed to his family and friends; and especially to his closest friend, travel companion, and confidante of many years, Susan Miller of Winston-Salem. Mr. Westmoreland is survived by one sister, Mrs. Louise W. Sills of Statesville; a nephew, Mr. William M. Sills of Statesville; and two nieces, Mrs. Judy W. Whetstone of Richmond, Virginia, and Dr. Leanne Langley of Southampton, England. A memorial service to celebrate his life will be conducted at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, June 1st at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with Dr. Don Gordon and the Rev. Christa Warise officiating. The family will receive friends immediately after the service. Private interment will be in Statesville, NC, at Oakwood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Ardmore Baptist Church Building Fund, 501 Miller Street, Winston-Salem, NC 27103. Online condolences may be made at www.hayworth-miller.com.
