Frank Hollifield

Mr. Frank Daniel Hollifield, 82, of Kernersville, passed away Saturday, February 24, 2018.

Frank was born in Clay County, NC on August 1, 1935 to the late Jack and Annie Mae (Ledford) Hollifield, and was the youngest of five siblings. He met a young nurse on the steps of the old Hiawassee, GA drugstore and said, "Nurse, I'm worse." The line worked, and this U.S. Airforce man and his beloved nurse, Shirley Anderson Hollifield, began a journey that last 62 years until she passed in March 2016.

Frank loved people.

First of all, he loved his family. He had three children with Shirley: Jeffrey Frank Hollifield, Mitzi Hollifield Brumley, and Barry Lee Hollifield, all surviving. Jeffrey gave him four grandchildren: Cindy Ebert, Logan Grace Hollifield, Kelli Renee Hollifield, and Brandon Daniel Hollifield. Mitzi gave him three grandchildren: firstborn grandchild Emily Brumley Abernathy, Andrew Brice Brumley, and Amy Brumley West. Barry remained unmarried, but his Border Collie, Bonni, was a great companion to dad during the twenty-three months Barry spent being his father's full-time live-in caregiver, a priceless gift to Frank and his family.

In addition to his grandchildren, Frank had six great-grandchildren whom he dearly loved: Damian Billman, Emma Jane Ebert, Colton Ebert, Chloe Ann Abernathy, Ryan Abernathy, and Jordan Alexander "JJ" West, Jr., all surviving.

Frank is also survived by his eldest sister, Reba Hollifield Nichols of Clay County, as well as, numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a sister, Blonde Hollifield Cage, and two brothers, Phillip Hollifield and Robert Hollifield.

Secondly, Frank loved his friends and the Kernersville community. He never met a stranger, and in his healthier days, never hesitated to help a neighbor in need. In his last two years, he grew especially close to the staff at the Olympic Restaurant in Colfax, NC, where he received a hero's welcome every visit, and found great joy in passing out pocketfuls of peppermint candy to them.

Even in his sometimes extended stays at Kernersville Medical Center, Frank won the hearts of the staff. He thought the world of Richard, Worth, and his beloved April - the team that saw him through some tough times, bringing laughter and the very best care.

Frank Hollifield loved deeply, gave generously, lived simply, and happily. He was an inspiration as he faced each day with optimism in spite of struggles that came with chronic illness.

The hole this father, Papaw, and friend leaves behind is deep and wide, but with it he also leaves an example we can follow. And wouldn't that be the best tribute to give such a man?
