Frank Osborne Hendrix, 87, passed away October 8, 2008 at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. He was born November 14, 1920 in Winston-Salem, the son of the late Thomas Robert and Fannie Lenora Petree Hendrix. Mr Hendrix was of the Christian faith and graduated from Oldtown High School in 1938. A World War II veteran, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1942 as a sonorman and fought at Normandy on D-Day. After the war he worked for 9 years at Southern Railway. In 1954 he joined his high school friend, Raleigh A. Hunter, Jr. and worked for Hunter Publishing Company (now Jostens) for 32 years retiring in 1986. He began as chief photographer traveling to high schools and universities making class photos. He was director of the camera department for many years, later becoming production manager, and ended his career as director of quality control. Mr. Hendrix will be remembered as a caring, quiet-natured man of impeccable integrity and character who taught by example, and who possessed a subtle wit. He enjoyed working in his yard, his garden, surf-fishing, camping and traveling. His incredible talent in nature photography was immense, matched only by his modesty by not having the need to display or sell his photographs. He served his country, his family, and his God. We will miss you. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by four brothers, Ralph Hendrix, Harold Hendrix, Clifton Hendrix and John Elgin Hendrix and two sisters, Alma Holder and Ina Hendrix. Surviving are his loving wife of 60 years, Arbutus Moore Hendrix whom he married on June 12, 1948; two daughters, Melinda Gomez of Elk Grove, California and Betsy Lenora Hendrix of Winston-Salem; two granddaughters, Leah Gomez Robinson and Rachel Delores Gomez; a grandson, Steven Frank Gomez; and a great granddaughter, Alyssa Gomez, all of California; two sisters, Mrs. Kathryn (Howard) Kiger and Mrs. Jane Crutchfield of Winston-Salem; and many nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Saturday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek chapel. A graveside service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, October 12 at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens with Dr. Cecil Cave officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, NC 27103. A tremendous thank you is given to the staff of the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home.
