Winston-Salem
Frances Anne Foster Shaw, born January 28, 1941, died peacefully on July 16, 2015 after a long illness. She was preceded in death by her first child, Bryson Logan Shaw and by her parents, James Edmund Foster and Elizabeth ""Betty"" Nelson Foster. Fran was graduated from East Carolina University in 1964 with a BA in English and Social Studies (Music minor) and a BS in education. She was a lifelong member of Kappa Delta Sorority, a violinist in the East Carolina Orchestra, a reporter for the school newspaper and a contributor to the school literary magazine. After graduation, Fran taught briefly at the U.S. Marine Air Station in Havelock, NC, and then moved to Alexandria, VA, where she worked for Pan American Airlines. During that time, she met LTJG Stephen K. Shaw, who was then stationed in Washington, D.C. with the Coast Guard. They were married on February 1, 1967, in Oakton, VA. A year later, they moved to Fairfax County, VA where Fran taught middle school English and Social Studies. They moved to North Carolina in 1970 and settled in Burlington. Stephanie S. Freese (Brett) and Matthew K. Shaw (Lindsay) were both born in Burlington. Shortly after Matthew's arrival in 1975, the family moved to Winston-Salem. Fran held several teaching positions for Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools. She was active in Hathaway Park Women's Club, serving first as treasurer and eventually president. Fran was also a docent at Reynolda House. She furthered her education in 1994 with a paralegal associate degree with Phi Theta Kappa status. From there, she taught English, writing, and business law at Forsyth Tech. Fran was an avid dancer, gardener, and a passionate musician, and was especially fond of the piano and mechanical tracker action pipe organ. Fran is survived by her husband, two children and their spouses, three grandchildren, and her brother, James P. Foster (Ronda) of Greensboro, NC. Funeral arrangements will be private with burial at Arlington National Cemetery at a future date. In lieu of flowers, any donations may be sent to Hospice of Winston-Salem or the Fisher House of Camp Lejeune, NC. (Hayworth-Miller Lewisville Chapel)
