Frances Mathes Nelson, beloved wife of James Nelson, died at her home in Winston-Salem on Wednesday, May 27, 2009. ""Francie"" as she was lovingly called by her family and friends was born April 25, 1958 in Winston-Salem. Upon her graduation from Parkland High School, she began work for the Veterans Administration and for 13 years she was secretary of the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church in Winston-Salem. She loved the beach and was a tremendous sports fan. Cheering for their favorite teams was a fun past-time for her and her husband, Jim. Her flower garden gave her great pleasure and she spent many happy hours tending its care. Francie was a good friend to all and helped anyone she could. She was especially close to her family. Their happiness and welfare were of the utmost importance to her. Francie left this earthly life to be with our Lord and is now a shining star in the heavens above. We will forever remember your smile, laughter, love, kindness, caring and delight in life. She was a wonderful wife and loving daughter. Our hearts are full of happy memories. May your memory be eternal, our beloved Francie. To cherish her memory, she leaves her husband, Jim; stepson, Clay Nelson; her parents, Jim and Stella Mathes; her brother, George; and a very special aunt, Dee Davis. Other family members surviving include her uncle, Nick Mathes and wife Maria; aunt, Rita Georgoulias and husband Mike; along with many cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends. She was preceded in death by her paternal grandparents, Thomas and Fotini Mathes; and maternal grandparents, Father George and Presvytera Maria Thalassinos. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, May 30 at The Greek Orthodox Church with Father Demetri Kangelaris, Father George Vlahos, and Father George Kiricoples officiating. Burial will follow in Forsyth Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 7-8 p.m. Friday, May 29 at the church with a Trisagion service at 7:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church, 435 Keating Dr., Winston-Salem, NC 27104 or St. George Greek Orthodox Church, 808 N.
