Flossie C. Holden died Sunday, March 1, 2009 at the age of 104, while residing at Flesher's Healthcare Center, Fairview, NC. Mrs. Holden was born June 27, 1904 in the Friedberg Community. She was the youngest of thirteen children born to Amos Myers and Julia Fishel Myers, all of whom precede her in death. Mrs. Holden graduated from Arcadia High School and was the first graduate of Draughons Business College. She began her secretarial career at Integon and later moved on to smaller insurance and real estate firms. She greatly enjoyed traveling and visited the Virgin Islands several times, traveled to Hawaii, and went on a pilgrimage to the Holy Land. She was married to D. Fleat Chiddie September 19, 1925 and they lived together for 46 years, until his death in 1971. Two children were born to their union, George Chiddie and Barbara Chiddie Mecimore. In 1973, she married Carl H. Holden who died in 1992. Mrs. Holden was baptized and confirmed at Friedberg Moravian Church and later became a member of Advent Moravian Church. There she was active in Sunday school, as Head Diener, and president of Senior Friends. In 1986 she moved to Salemtowne Retirement Community. While there, she learned to use a computer and corresponded by email with friends in Russia, Korea, and other places. She became an expert at basket weaving. Her baskets won many prizes at local Arts and Craft Shows and at the Dixie Classic Fair. In October of last year she moved to Asheville to be closer to her grandchildren. She adjusted to her new home quickly. She often said, ""I live in Asheville."" She is survived by a son, George Chiddie and wife Jean of Asheville, NC, daughter, Barbara Mecimore and husband Charles of Winston-Salem; six grandchildren, Belinda Winkle (David), Beth Gregg (David), Susan Babelay (Paul), Laura Gerhardt (Jeb), Doug Mecimore (Robin), John Mecimore (Jhane), 15 great-grandchildren, six great-great grandchildren, many nieces and nephews, and by a host of friends. A funeral service will be held 11:00 AM Thursday, March 5, 2009 at Advent Moravian Church with Rev. Dan Conrad and Rev. Roger Kimball officiating. Burial will follow at the church graveyard. The family will receive friends 7-9 PM Wednesday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Advent Moravian Church, 1514 W. Clemmonsville Rd. Winston-Salem, NC 27127 or to a charity of choice.
