F.L. Shaver

Mr. F.L. "Doc" Shaver, 88, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Friday, July 13, 2018 at Salemtowne. He celebrated his 88th birthday just two days previous with a Moravian band concert dedicated to him at Salemtowne.

Doc was born July 11, 1930 in Statesville to the late Mary Viola Kestler and Forest Vernon Shaver. He graduated from Gray High School in 1947 and served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War until 1954. After attending Catawba College, he worked for Western Electric, where he retired after 42 years of service. Doc was longtime member of Advent Moravian Church, where he served as Elder, Trustee and Superintendent of Sunday School as well as playing in the Moravian band. He enjoyed all sports, especially golf. Doc was a proud member of the Konnoak Hills Lions Club, where he was a District Governor. In addition to volunteering at Sunnyside Ministries for 20 years, Doc spent many years as a Scoutmaster for the Boy Scout troop that he established at Advent Moravian Church.

Doc is survived by his wife of 64 years, Violet Miller Shaver; daughter, Beth Shaver Gunter and husband John; son, Mark Shaver and wife Beth; and his grandchildren, who were the light of his life, Samuel Winston Shaver and Elizabeth Scott Gunter.

A celebration of Doc's life will be held at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, July 17, 2018 at Advent Moravian Church with Rev. Dr. Tim Sapp officiating. Interment will follow the service in the church graveyard. The family will receive friends on Monday, July 16, 2018 from 6 - 8 PM at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel.
