Mrs. Evelyn Bodford Sheek Southern, 94, died on July 21, 2013, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem. She was born on February 17, 1919, in Forsyth County to Charles Lee and Emma McKnight Bodford. She retired from the Winston-Salem Journal after 31 years. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Charles Sherrill Sheek, Sr; a son, Charles Sheek, and her brother Charles Bodford. She is survived by her husband, Gilbert Southern, her daughter, Diane Peoples, and husband Jerry of Davie County, her son Kenneth Sheek and wife Jeanette of Clemmons, grandsons Andy Peoples of Asheville, Wesley Sheek and wife Rhonda of Davidson County, Charles Sheek and wife Sherri of Lexington, and granddaughters Wendy Sheek of Clemmons, and Traci Jarvis and husband Brandon of Clemmons. Her great-grandchildren are Kenneth Coburn Sheek, Brittany and Shane Jarvis, Kaylee and Gray Patterson, Tristan and Amanda Sheek. She is also survived by a niece, Jeannie Tuttle, and husband Gene, and a daughter-in-law, Gail Fletcher. The family wishes to thank the staff at Danby House Assisted Living for the care they provided for Evelyn, with special thanks to Debra, Jennifer, Mary, Wendy, and Tracy. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM Tuesday, July 23, 2013, at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with Rev. Jo Bjorling officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow the service at Bethel United Methodist Church Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Forsyth County or the Bethel United Methodist Church.
