Evelyn Criner Powers, 89, of Tappahannock, Virginia, passed away Wednesday, Aug. 10, 2016, at the Carrington Place nursing home in Tappahannock.
A graveside service will be at 3 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 14, 2016, at Salem Cemetery with Mrs. Powers' son-in-law, the Rev. Jim Ailor, officiating. Hayworth-Miller Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
Mrs. Powers was born May 18, 1927, in Forsyth County, North Carolina, to the late Arthur Clarence Criner and Ethel Gordon Criner.
Mrs. Powers graduated in 1944 from Reynolds High School, Winston-Salem. She attended secretarial college before marrying the love of her life, Earl Burton Powers, on June 28, 1947, at First Baptist Church Winston Salem. He died in 2006.
During her lifetime, Mrs. Powers was a homemaker and raised two children. She was active in her church and enjoyed cooking, reading novels and watching old movies.
After living in North Carolina for several years, Mr. and Mrs. Powers lived in St. Petersburg, Florida, and Ocala, Florida. Mrs. Powers lived her last years in Virginia.
Mrs. Powers was also preceded in death by a son, David Burton Powers. She is survived by her daughter, Lynne P. Ailor (Jim) of Caret, Virginia; four grandchildren: Davis Burton Powers (Jamie) of Pasadena, California; Nolan Jackson Powers (Sabrina) of Pueblo, Colorado; Dara Parker (Jeremy) of Afton, Virginia; Pepper Ailor (Jordanna) of Tappahannock,Virginia; and eight great-grandchildren.
