Charlotte- Mrs. Evelyn Cromer Pople, 94, formerly of Winston-Salem, entered God's kingdom with thanksgiving and praise on Saturday, November 26, 2011 at Presbyterian Hospice Care after an 8 year journey with Alzheimers. She was born October 17, 1917 in Forsyth County to the late Ernest Cromer and Eva Smith Cromer. She was preceded in death by her husband, Vestal Marion Pople in 1983. She was also preceded in death by her daughter, Peggy Pople Wall, her adopted parents, Elisa and Martin Smith, a sister, Inez Styers, and a brother, Melvin Cromer. She is survived by her daughter, Doris Pople Griffin and husband Stephen; two brothers, Bill Cromer and wife Betty, and Arnold Cromer and wife Patty; a grandson, Arthur Kirk. Mrs. Pople was adopted and raised by Elisa and Martin Smith (her grandparents), and was raised in a loving, caring, and nurturing home. She was a graduate of Liberty High School and was an Honor Roll student and a Class Officer and a member of the tennis and swim teams. She had a passion for books and was an avid reader. She retired from P.H. Hanes Knitting Company. Mrs. Pople turned her great love for babies into the joy of her life by becoming a nanny. A funeral service will be held at 1:30pm, Tuesday, November 29, 2011 at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with the Rev. Tim Gross officiating. The family will receive friends from 12:00 noon until 1:30pm prior to the service.
