ASHEBORO-Evangelist John Henry Long, 77, formerly of Colfax, went to his heavenly home on Thursday, July 22, 2010. He was born March 11, 1933 in Guilford Co. to the late Maylon and Hettie Coffin Long. John was a member of Mt. Calvary Independent Baptist Church of Asheboro. He was a faithful preacher of the Gospel for fifty six years, and had served in the United States Navy. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by two infant daughters; a sister, Lorraine; and three brothers, Wade, C.A, and Charles. Surviving are his wife, Dorothy Andrews Long of the home; three daughters, Sonya Poole and husband, Neil of Asheboro, Tammie Mathena and husband, Ira of Greensboro; Karen Holt and husband, Tom of Stokesdale; one son, Tim Long and wife Debbie of High Point; two brothers, D.W. Long of Thomasville, Richard Long of Salter Path; one sister, Dolly Westmoreland of Colfax; nine grandchildren; and fourteen great-grandchildren. A funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, July 27, 2010 at Smith Grove Baptist Church with Dr. Chuck Peters, Pastor Neil Poole, Pastor Ed Yeomans, Evangelist Jack Tripp, and Pastor John Byerly. Mr. Long's body will lie in state from 10:00 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6-9:00 p.m. Monday, July 26, 2010 at the church and at other times at the home of Sonya Poole, 1204 Oakland Ave., Asheboro. In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorials be made to Mt. Calvary Independent Baptist Church Sunday School Building Fund, 1206 Oakland Ave., Asheboro, NC 27203.
