Eva Whitman Ball

Eva Whitman Ball was born August 9, 1910 and passed away on Thursday, January 19, 2012. She was the daughter of Julius and Estella Kearney Whitman of Pfafftown, NC. In 1928 she married Dumont Ball, and they lived happily together in Pfafftown with their two daughters, Bettie and Flo, until his death in 1936. Eva raised two girls alone and never remarried. She solely supported the family by working at Hanes Knitting for 41 years. Eva and the girls moved to Dacian Street in Winston-Salem in 1948, and she lived there independently until she was 94 years old. At that time, she went to live with her daughter, Flo Bassett, as she could no longer take care of herself. Eva lived with her daughter until she was 100 years old and then moved to Assisted Living at The Danby House. The family visited daily to take care of her needs. Eva was involved with church and was a member of the Mary Martha Class of Pinedale Christian Church. She never had a driver's license so she rode the church van each Sunday, and later Keith Tucker provided transportation when she moved from her home on Dacian Street. She was preceded in death by three brothers, Paul, Claude and James Whitman. Surviving are her daughter, Bettie Carmichael and husband B.J.; daughter, Flo Bassett; granddaughters, Kaye Carter of Atlanta, GA, Faye Calder of Winston-Salem, and Deborah Boles of Dallas, TX; one great granddaughter, Kristin Calder of Winston-Salem; and one sister, Emma Leagans. The family will receive friends from 6-8:30 p.m. on Saturday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday at Pinedale Christian Church with the Rev. Bill McKenzie and the Rev. Bob McCaskill officiating. Burial will follow in Pfafftown Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Pinedale Christian Church, 3395 Peters Creek Parkway, Winston-Salem, NC 27127. The family would like to thank the staff of The Danby House, Forsyth Medical Center Staff, and the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home for their love and support.
