Mrs. Eugenie ""Genie"" Van Overbeke Winder, 96, of Winston-Salem passed away Friday, March 11, 2011 at Arbor Acres Retirement Community. Mrs. Winder was born on July 10, 1914 in Cincinnati, OH to Frank and Elsie Haigh Van Overbeke. She was a founding member of the Thomas Jefferson Unitarian Church in Louisville, KY. Mrs. Winder received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Mathematics from the University of Louisville and was also enrolled in continuing education classes. She loved the University of Louisville and was a true basketball fan that showed her support with season tickets. Mrs. Winder was very active in the community volunteering for Recording for the Blind and the American Heart Association, as well as being the first President of Zachary Taylor Elementary School P.T.A. Mrs. Winder was an avid knitter, enjoyed reading, and loved traveling. She was also a member of the Blue Chips Investment Club and of numerous bridge clubs. Mrs. Winder had a true appreciation for the arts. She was a Docent at the J.B. Speed Art Museum and a season ticket holder to the Actors Theater of Louisville. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Robert Eugene Winder, a daughter Adele Pedigo and a brother Charles Van Overbeke. Mrs. Winder is survived by a daughter, Nancy Fowler and husband Richard of Winston-Salem; three grandchildren, Chesney Fowler-Lajczok of Washington, DC, Clay Pedigo of Woodbridge, CT, and Grant Pedigo of Sheridan, WY; a son-in-law, Van Pedigo of Richfield, OH; and a brother Frank Van Overbeke, Jr. of Las Crucis, NM. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Memorials may be made to a charity of the donor's choice. The family would like to send a special thanks to the staff of Arbor Acres for their loving care of Mrs. Winder. Online condolences may be made at www.hayworth-miller.com.
