Eugene ""Gene"" Rothwell Hayes, 98, passed away Saturday, October 9, 2010 in Tucson, AZ where he has lived with his daughter, Judy for nine years. Mr. Hayes had spent his entire life in Winston-Salem. He was born September 21, 1912 in High Point to the late Newton L. Hayes, Sr. and Bertha Canter Hayes. Mr. Hayes was preceded in death by his wife of 69 years, Grace Borders Hayes; his daughter, Barbara Joan Parks; brother, Marion Hayes; son-in-law, Charles O. Mahaffey, Sr.; his step-mother, Ada Knouse Hayes; step brother, George Hayes; and step sister, Gertrude Lineback. Surviving are two daughters, Jean H. Mahaffey and Judy Stivers of Tucson, AZ; brothers and sisters, Dorothy Cousisamono, Ronald Hayes (Crystal), Alberta Foltz, Ann Michael, Vinson Hayes (Cathy), N.L. Hayes, Jr. (Evelyn), and Jimmy Hayes; grandchildren, Chuck Mahaffey (Peggy), Marcia Mahaffey, Andy Stivers (Anne) of Atlanta, GA, Christine Myers (Billy), Wayne Parks of Nebraska; great grandchildren, Lauren Wade (Andy) of Louisa, VA, Jonathan Mahaffey of Charleston, SC, Zachary Mahaffey of Columbia, SC, Riley Stivers of Atlanta, GA, Daniel Myers (Rachel), Bryan Myers (Melissa), Dakota Parks of Charlotte, Kelly Parks of Wilmington, and Nathalie Arnold (Jason) of Texas; great-great grandchildren, Tanner and Drew Wade (fifth generation), Naomi and Dylan Myers, and Ella Joann Arnold; a very close nephew, Tony Hayes; and a number of nieces, nephews, and so many friends. Mr. Hayes was retired from Arista Mills with 20 years of service. He owned and operated Hayes Heating and Air Conditioning. Mr. Hayes loved playing baseball with the city league and as a manager. He also loved to fish. He attended R.J. Reynolds High School. A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, October 16, 2010 at Parklawn Memorial Park with the Rev. Norwood Green and the Rev. Kevin Conley officiating. The family will receive friends from 6:30- 8:00 p.m. Friday, October 15 at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel.
