Eugene Fielder Gillam, Jr.

Eugene (Gene) Fielder Gillam, Jr. passed away at his home in Winston-Salem on April 29, 2015 at the age of 95. He was born in Des Moines, Iowa on November 24, 1919. He was the only child of Eugene and Neva Gillam, Sr. Gene attended public schools in Greensboro and was a member of the class of 1943 at the Citadel, in Charleston, South Carolina.
First Lieutenant Eugene F. Gillam served as a bomber pilot in World War II flying the B-26 Marauders for the 9th U.S. Army Air Force, 391st Bomb Group, 574 Bomb Squadron. He flew 61 missions in the air offensive at Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland and Ardennes. He survived being shot down several times, and was rescued by families and the French Underground. He was awarded the Air Medal, American Campaign Medal, World War II Victory Medal and Distinguished Unit Badge. After being honorably discharged in 1946, Gene served in the Air National Guard, 14th Air Force, honorably discharged in 1949 and as First Lieutenant, Artillery, National Guard honorably discharged in 1951.
While living in Winston-Salem, Gene worked at and retired from Jefferson Standard Life Insurance Company. He was also very involved in the biking and jogging community.
Gene was predeceased by his loving wife, Dorothy May Clymer Gillam on August 13, 1987. He is survived by his son , Eugene Fielder Gillam, III (Ann) and his daughters, Susan Laster (Larry) and Catherine Becker. He also leaves behind his grandchildren Michele Fling (David), Kevin Gillam (Samantha), Kelly Frazier (Robert), David Laster (Vanessa), Scott Laster (Nicole), John Laster (Le) and Ryan Laster (Stephanie). He was also blessed with nine great grandchildren: Madison and Ellie Gillam, Tyler and Kiley Fling, Sydney and Riley Laster, Laura Lane Laster, Dottie Ly Laster, James Laster, Austin Kueffner and Neva Frazier. He also leaves behind his dear friend Miriam Adams.
Burial will be at Crestview Memorial Gardens in a private graveside service with military honors and officiated by Dr. Gary Chapman.
