Etta "Jodie" Smith

Colfax – Mrs. Etta “Jodie” Louise Seawell Smith, 86, passed away on Thursday, April 23, 2020 at her residence. She was born on September 30, 1933 in Guilford County to John Robson and Julia Holder Seawell. Jodie was affectionately known as “Mama” to her 4 boys. She was always sacrificing herself for others, especially for her family and loved ones. Jodie was also a wonderful cook. If you came to her house, you wouldn’t go hungry because she was going to feed you.

After she raised her boys, Jodie went to work outside of the home for over 20 years. Even while working she still continued to care for her home and for her husband.

In addition to her parents, Jodie was preceded in death by her loving husband of 52 years, David E. Smith; sister, Mary Ruth Slaydon; brother, Sam Seawell; and a great grandson, Samson Eugene Quate. Left to cherish her memory are her four loving sons, Bob Smith (wife, Shirl), Johnny Smith (wife, Carol), Bill Smith (wife, Cindy), and Benny Smith (wife, Sharon); ten grandchildren, Pam Hooker (husband, Keith), Marsha Lankford (husband, Dwayne), Kim Quate (husband, Eddie), Amy Anderson (husband, Jeff), Travis Smith (wife, Leanne), Ben Smith (wife, Charlsie), Nicky Tilley (husband, Jamie), Julie Hawtree (husband, Daniel), Jill Vaughn (husband, David), and Katie Davis (husband, Matt); 26 great grandchildren; 5 great – great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Due to the pandemic of COVID-19 and the limitations of numbers for public gatherings, a private family graveside service will be held at Westminister Gardens with Pastor Bob Smith and Pastor Daniel Hawtree officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Clearview Baptist Church at 150 Station Rd, Mayodan, NC 27027, Kerwin Baptist Church at 4520 Old Hollow Road, Kernersville, NC 27284, New Hope Baptist Church at 1520 Hinsdale Rd, Walnut Cove, NC 27052, or to Shining Light Baptist Church 4530 W. Wendover Ave, Greensboro, NC 27409. Hayworth-Miller Kernersville Chapel is assisting the Smith family.
