Esther Vernon Dorsett Hedgecock

WINSTON-SALEM-Esther Vernon Dorsett Hedgecock, 94, passed away Thursday, September 16, 2010 at Brighton Gardens Assisted Living Community. She was born in Winston-Salem on June 4, 1916 and is survived by her husband of 21 years, Grover W. Hedgecock. Other survivors include a daughter, Dee Ann Sanders and a son, Sam H. Dorsett, Jr. and wife, Wanda S. Dorsett; six grandchildren, Sam Sanders, Jr., Sallie Sanders, David Sanders, Ashley Kerman, Amy Kelly and Sam Dorsett III and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Sam H. Dorsett, her parents, J. R. Vernon and Sara Proctor Vernon; her sisters, Ruby Smith, Roberta Franklin and Doris Ward; her brothers, Wilson Vernon and James Vernon; and her son-in-law, Sam Sanders. Esther graduated from R. J. Reynolds High School and received recognition for singing on the radio with the ""Songbirds"" trio. She will be remembered by her family and friends as a wonderful wife, mother and grandmother. She exemplified the true Christian spirit in her life by uplifting others with her care, concern and wisdom. She loved her church, Parkway Presbyterian, singing in the choir for over 60 years. She also taught Sunday school and was very active in women's work. She served numerous times as a committee chairperson, circle leader and historian, and in 1980 received the Presbyterian Women Honorary Life Membership Award. The funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, September 20, 2010 at Parkway Presbyterian Church located at the corner of Yorkshire Road and Silas Creek Parkway. The family will receive friends from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. in the gathering area of the Church Narthex prior to the service. Burial at Forsyth Memorial Park will immediately follow the service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that any memorials be made to Parkway Presbyterian Church, 1000 Yorkshire Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27106. Funeral services are under the direction of Hayworth-Miller Funeral Home.
