Mrs. Estelle Barbara Koren Johnston went to join the Heavenly Choir on March 26, 2009. Estelle was born in Passaic, New Jersey on February 28, 1914. She was the last surviving child of six born to Margaret and Stephan Koren. Estelle was preceded in death by her husband of thirty four years Milton Johnston who died on March 17, 1974. She is survived by two sons, William Stephan Johnston and his wife Susan of Winston-Salem, David Milton Johnston of Cheyenne, Wyoming and one daughter, Nancy Beth Johnston Zwick of Winston-Salem. She also is survived by six grandchildren: Kimberly Anne Johnston of New Jersey, William Todd Johnston and his wife Melanie of Seattle, Washington, David Paul Johnston and Lan Holtsclaw of Virginia Beach, Virginia, Elizabeth Ann Johnston Nix, Michael Todd Zwick and Julia Pezzullo Johnston all of Winston-Salem. Three great grandchildren survive her as well: Miranda Elizabeth Nix, Johnathan Tanner Nix, both of Winston-Salem and Olivia Madeleine Johnston of Seattle, Washington. Estelle studied dance in New York City before graduating from secretarial school. Prior to becoming a mother and homemaker she worked as an executive secretary in New York City. She relocated to North Carolina in 1979. Estelle was a member of Calvary Baptist Church and sang with several church choirs in New Jersey. Until her later years she indulged her favorite pastimes, bird-watching, playing the piano and creating quilts for her family and friends. Her easygoing manner and humor endeared her to friend and stranger alike. An informal (casual, comfortable dress) service of remembrance will be conducted by the Rev. William S. Johnston at Haworth-Miller Funeral Home on Saturday, March 28, 2009 at 2:00 pm at Haworth-Miller Funeral Home on Silas Creek Parkway. The family will receive friends following the service until 3:30 pm. Her remains will be interred alongside her husband at Cedar Lawn Cemetery in Paterson, New Jersey. The family wishes to acknowledge the excellent care given to our mother at Forsyth Hospital. We would especially like to thank Melissa Bowman, RN, Lisa Burke, RN, Barbara Goldsmith, NP, Georgia Scott, M.D. and Chaplain Doug Evans for their compassionate and professional care. We would also like to thank the many friends and staff of Center Grove Baptist Church for their companionship and pastoral care during our mother's final days and for the many pastoral visits over the years from the staff at Calvary Baptist Church.
