Ernestine Whitehead O'Neal, 102, passed away on Thursday, May 18, 2017 surrounded by her loving family. Ernestine was born on November 14, 1914 in Rocky Mount to Ernest Lee Whitehead and Minnie Mae Tesh Whitehead. She grew up during the depression and persevered through the World War II era as a nurse, mother and wife. In addition to raising her family, she worked as a nurse at Duke Hospital, Baptist Hospital and Forsyth Memorial Hospital. She was a member of Konnoak Hills Moravian Church.
Most of all, Ernestine enjoyed spending time with her family and was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Thomas O'Neal, Sr; and her parents. She is survived by her daughter, Patricia Dewan of Winston-Salem; her son, William T. O'Neal, Jr. and wife Ginny of Wilimington; grandchildren, Neal Dewan and wife Isabel, Erin Dewan, Jonathan Rowe, Matthew Rowe and wife Traci, and Andrew Rowe; great-grandchildren, Paige and Tyler Rowe, and Raquel, Emilio, Carlos, and Aniel; and sister-in-law, Louise Sanders of Surfside.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff at Salemtowne Assisted Living for the excellent love and care they gave to Ernestine over the years.
A graveside service will be held on Sunday, May 21, 2017 at 3:00 pm at Parklawn Memorial Park, with Rev. John D. Rights officiating. The family will receive friends on Sunday prior to the graveside from 1:30-2:30 pm at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel.
