Mr. Ernest Fred Hellinger, 94, formerly of Winston-Salem, passed away Saturday, August 8, 2009. He was born February 21, 1915 in Hudson County, NJ to Charles L. and Margaret Nagengast Hellinger. Mr. Hellinger was a World War II Army veteran serving in Iceland and France. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and a friend to all. Ernie was known for his sense of humor, love of reading, golf and acts of charity. Mr. Hellinger was an active member and usher at Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church, where he was a former President of the Good Times Club as well as a member of the Knights of Columbus. Mr. Hellinger retired from Schlitz Brewing Company as Assistant Plant Engineer. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Elizabeth ""Betty"" Hellinger of High Point; two sons, Dan Hellinger (wife Joann) of Webster Grove, MO and Ray Hellinger (wife Kathy) of Winston-Salem; one daughter, Marie Hellinger (husband Doug) of Chevy Chase, MD; six grandchildren, David (Jennifer), Tim (Kyrin), Michael (Gabbie), Joe (Tiffany), Christine and Jason as well as five great grandchildren, Owen, Wyatt, Clara, Tillie and Otto. A funeral mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, August 12, 2009 at Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church. Interment will follow in Parklawn Memorial Park. A rosary service will be held at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday with visitation following until 8:30 p.m. at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel.
