Ernest Decatur Hayes passed away July 14, 2013 at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. He was born March 26, 1926 in Winston-Salem, NC to the late Cicero A. Hayes and Annie Belton Hayes. A proud veteran of WWII, Mr. Hayes was past president of the Winston Salem Homebuilders Association and built many homes and commercial buildings in the area. As a long time member of Waughtown Baptist Church, he loved Jesus, his neighbors and his neighborhood Bible Study in British Woods, where he loved to play guitar and sing praises. He was an avid bass fisherman who enjoyed spending time at his daughter's home at Lake Norman. He was obsessed with Braves Baseball, the Carolina Tarheels, and love for his family, especially his grandchildren and was so proud of each of them. He is dearly loved by his wife of 65 years, Kathleen Wheeling Hayes, son Samuel W. Hayes and wife Jen of Charleston, daughter Polly H. James and husband Billy of Charlotte, 6 grandchildren, Erin Marsala, Seth Hayes, Dillon Hayes, Lucas Hayes all of Raleigh, David James of Los Angeles, and Andy James of Charlotte. He was blessed with one great-granddaughter, Mackenzie Marsala. Mr. Hayes was met in heaven by his daughter, Laura L. Hayes. He was predeceased by his brothers and sister, Early Hayes, Dan Hayes, Willard Hayes and Lessie Shoaf. Visitation will be held today, Monday, July 15, 2013, from 2:00 - 3:45 in the Chapel of Waughtown Baptist Church. The funeral service will follow at 4:00 pm, officiated by the Reverend Eddie Brackett. Burial will be at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Waughtown Baptist Church, 1538 Waughtown Street, Winston-Salem 27107 or to Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home, 101 Hospice Place, Winston-Salem, NC 27103.
