Mr. Ernest Monroe Bowden, Jr., 94, passed away Friday, August 20, 2021. He was born January 3, 1927, in Stokes County to the late Ernest Monroe Bowden, Sr. and Chattie Hill Bowden. Ernest proudly served his country in the United States Army during World War II. He retired from the City of Winston-Salem as a Superintendent of the streets division with 30 years of service. During his tenure with the city, he also worked as a reserve for the Winston-Salem Police Department. Ernest then worked for R.J. Reynolds as a truck driver for 12 years and upon his retirement from there he worked for Northpoint Collision for 27 years. He never met a stranger and had a smile for everyone when he saw them. Ernest was known for many things, including his love for all animals, bringing a new pet home often; riding his motorcycle up until his late 80s; flying his own plane; riding horses; drag racing and racing cars at Bowman Grey Stadium; “attempting” to fix anything and everything; and his love for everything Ford. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife, Carrie W. Bowden and sister, Thelma King. Ernest is survived by his daughter, Pam Settle (Jim); grandson, Jason Settle (Emily); great-granddaughter, Lauren Settle; two great-great grandsons, Bryson and Barrett; sister, Shirley Griffin (Bobby); and loving friend and companion, Linda Clendenin. A graveside service will be conducted 10:00 AM Wednesday, August 25th at Gardens of Memory in Walkertown, NC. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Trellis Supportive Care, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, NC 27103. Online condolences may be made at www.hayworth-miller.com.
