Emma Jean Hubbard

LEWISVILLE - Mrs. Emma Jean Hubbard, 83, passed into the more immediate presence of the Lord Sunday, January 04, 2015, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home after a brief illness.

Jean was born February 19, 1931 on Walker Avenue in Greensboro, N.C. She was the middle child of the late Flay Edward Williard, Sr. and the late Estelle Lindsay Williard. Jean moved from Greensboro to Winston-Salem at a young age and grew up on South Main Street in Winston-Salem. She attended South Park Elementary and graduated in 1950 from James A. Gray High School. Jean met Bob Hubbard from Kernersville, N.C. when they both were teenagers at the Reynolds Park swimming pool in the summer of 1947, but Bob's military service intervened and it was five years before they reconnected again. After a very brief courtship they decided to elope and were married in South Carolina. They were married for 62 glorious years.

Jean was a very devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. She was a life-long and third generation member of Trinity Moravian Church on Sprague Street and was very active in the church until her health prevented it. Jean was a very avid bridge player and loved playing so much, anytime she was in a crowd she try to stir up a bridge game. Out of desperation she learned to play golf at a later age (tired of being a golf widow) and became a member of the Ladies Tanglewood Golf Association. From that time on all of the Hubbard vacations were golfing vacations anywhere from Virginia to Florida, where they met and enjoyed many new acquaintances.

Jean was predeceased by her mother and father and her brother, Flay Edward Williard, Jr. She is survived by her husband, Bobby; daughter, Patricia and her husband, Richard M. Martin; grandson, Richard R. Martin and wife Charity; great grandsons, Myers Martin and Maddox Martin; sister, Delores Brendle; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A celebration of Jean's life will be held on Tuesday, January 6, 2015 at 2 pm at Trinity Moravian Church. Burial will follow at Salem Moravian Graveyard. The family will receive friends Monday, January 5 from 6 pm - 8 pm at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be to Trinity Moravian Church, General Fund, 220 E Sprague Street, Winston-Salem, NC 27127.
