Emma Black Darnell, 66, went to be with her Lord on August 18, 2008 at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. She was born October 6, 1941 to the late Gillen Grafton and Alice Williard Black. Emma retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company in 1994 after 33 ½ years of service. Thirty years were spent in the Quality Control Department where she made many lifelong friends. She was a faithful, lifetime member of Antioch Baptist Church where she was an active member of the choir for over 50 years. She served on various committees including Chairman of the Special Events Committee and Coordinator for the Twilighters' Senior Events from 1994-2006. She taught Sunday School in the 60's and 70's. She was a member of Women on Missions and served as president for several years. She also volunteered her talents as pianist when needed. Prior to her illness, Emma sang in the 2000 member choir at the 2006 Southern Baptist Convention in Greensboro. Emma was preceded in death by a brother, Curtis Black. She is survived by Billy Joe Darnell, her wonderful husband of 49 years, a daughter, Teresa Yost and husband Skip of Lexington, NC and a son, Joe Darnell and wife Julie of Salisbury, NC. She was blessed by four very special grandchildren, Joshua Graham, Michelle Graham, Collin Darnell and Carlie Darnell and three step grandchildren, Kurt Yost, Jordan Yost and Danielle Yost. She is also survived by a brother, Pete Black and (Bonnie), sisters Marilynn Patterson and her husband David, Geneva Pardue, Jill Chucci and her husband Joe and three special sisters in Christ and dear friends, Faye Fincher, Ann DeBusk and JoAnn Hauser. The funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 AM Thursday, August 21, 2008 at Antioch Baptist Church with Pastor Neal Eller and Rev. Don Davis officiating. Burial will follow at Oaklawn Memorial Garden. The family will receive friends from 6-9 PM Wednesday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. Special thanks to the nurses, doctors and phlebotomists at WFUBMC and the Comprehensive Cancer Center. Special thanks to the staff at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home for the support and care in mom's last days with us.
