Mr. Emil Gerald Maruca, age 90, of Kenwood Street, Winston-Salem, NC died Tuesday, May 11, 2010 at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. He was born April 11, 1920 in Wheeling, WV, to the late John B. and Katherine Sardonell Maruca, he was a graduate of Wheeling High School, Class of 1938. Along with his father and older brother Philip, he worked in the grocery and wholesale business and was part owner of City Grocery located at 53 - 17th Street in Wheeling. He was a talented musician, playing the bass fiddle in Wheeling area bands along with Philip, pianist. He held LIFE MEMBERSHIP with the American Federation of Musicians Local 142 - A.F. of M., Wheeling, WV. In October 1962, he was asked (invited) to come to Winston-Salem to live with his sister- Jeannette Maruca Adams. For many years he was employed by ARA Food Service at Wake Forest University as Provisions Manager, as well as, Manager of the Soda Shop, retiring in 1965 after working for twenty-three years. Emil liked to garden, his beautiful roses still grow along the fences. He grew the best tomatoes and enjoyed giving them to neighbors. He was a gentle person and a great help to his sister ""Jeannette Mae"". Emil was predeceased by his parents, brother, Philip B. Maruca and sister, Mrs. Ann Page and pets, Tigger and Midnite. Emil was a long-time member of Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church. He is survived by his brother, Richard A. Maruca (Mary) of Wheeling, WV; sister, Jeannette Maruca Adams (Don); Nieces, Andrea Adams Hefner (Tony), Marsha Ellis (John), Cathy Porter, Linda Kay Zeik (Terry), Phyllis Barnhart, Gloria (Pidgie) Shoemaker; nephews, Johnny A. Maruca (Becky), Travis L. Zeik, Todd Zeik (Helen); also, Michele Parr (Tom), Michael porter (Melissa) and new son, Gabriel, Kenney Porter, Bethany Thompson (Brent) and other nieces and nephews, Jason, Ashley, Ellis, Abigail, Megan Zeik, Connor, Ava, Holden Thompson, and children of the Parr family. Visitation for family and friends will be on Sunday, May 16, 2010, from 6:00-7:30pm, at Hayworth-Miller Funeral Home on Silas Creek Parkway. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church on Monday, May 17, 2010, at 11:00 AM, with Friar Bill Robinson, OFM Conv., as Celebrant. Burial will follow at Forsyth Memorial Park. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church, 1730 Link Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27103. The family wishes to thank all the doctors and nurses, especially Nate, in the Intensive Care Unit at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center and the Cardiology Department for the loving and excellent care they gave Emil.
