Elsie Brendle Sawyer

Elsie Brendle Sawyer July 13, 1916 - November 10, 2009 Elsie Brendle Sawyer or Ooie, as we called her, was an angel sent from Heaven. She returned to be with her Lord on Tuesday, November 10, 2009 at the age of 93, having lived a long and full life, influencing and inspiring everyone around her. Waiting there for her is her adored husband of 32 years, Robert Clyde Sawyer and her own little angel, infant daughter Margaret Ann. Elsie was a teacher and guidance counselor in the Winston Salem/Forsyth County school system for 39 years. She was a long time member of South Fork Baptist Church serving as church librarian and Sunday School teacher. Elsie will forever be remembered by her devoted niece who was also her dedicated caretaker for many years, Angela Sawyer; her cherished sister in law who was more a daughter than an in law, Allie Fair Sawyer; her faithful and loving niece, Karen Buckner, Karen's husband, John Buckner, and daughters, Rylee and Regan; her beloved nephew, Robert Christopher Sawyer and his wife, Crissy; caring friend and the widow of her dear nephew, Charles Sawyer II, Katherine Brewer along with their treasured daughter whom Elsie regarded as a granddaughter, Rebecca Catherine Sawyer; her cherished niece, Kaye Jackson; valued friend, Lydia Laird; much loved niece, Doris Lindsay; and treasured niece, Sue West, whose soft voice and tender touch brought comfort in Elsie's final hours; as well as countless other friends and family whom were blessed to know her. Elsie loved watching Price is Right and Wheel of Fortune, reading, laughing, being with family and friends and having fun with her pets. Elsie touched the lives of many people with her smile and generosity and maintained her trademark loving smile all the way to the end. Friends and family are invited to attend her home going celebration on Friday, November 13, 2009 at 2:00 at Sawyer Cemetary in Bryson City, North Carolina. Visitation will be held Wednesday, November 11, 2009 from 7:00 - 9:00 at Hayworth-Miller Funeral Home in Winston Salem, NC. Prior to her passing, Elsie requested that, in lieu of flowers, donations be sent to the person who gave such devoted care and attendance to her for so many years, Angela Rene Sawyer c/o Sun Trust Bank, Jonestown Rd., Winston Salem, NC 27104. Because of Angie's love and devotion, Elsie was able to remain at home in the surroundings that she cherished so dearly. Elsie's sweet smile, warm embrace, and easy laughter will be missed until we see her again. We praise God for the blessing of having been loved by her.
