Elsie Parrish Lasley

KERNERSVILLE- Elsie Lucille Parrish Lasley, 98, passed away on Thursday, October 02, 2014 at Novant Health Forsyth Medical Center Palliative Care. She was born September 18, 1916 in Forsyth Co. to the late Wade and Hilah Barrow Parrish.

Mrs. Lasley grew up in the Kernersville area and graduated with her class from Kernersville School in 1933. She worked a full-time job in the payroll department at Adams Millis Hosiery Mill during her last year of high school. During that year she received her assignments weekly and took tests either on Friday after work or on Saturdays. She married the love of her life, the late Charles Leon Lasley, on June 27, 1936. After building and moving into their home in Kernersville in 1940, WWII necessitated a move to Norfolk, VA for the couple. Mrs. Lasley worked in the payroll department at the Naval Supply Depot while her husband worked as a civilian at the U.S. Naval Air Station. In 1945, after returning to Kernersville, Mrs. Lasley soon became a housewife and mother.

Mrs. Lasley was an active member of First Baptist Church in Kernersville from an early age, growing up in the youth organizations and later the Women's Missionary Union. In 1949 she became WMU President and in 1954 made the first of many trips to Ridgecrest Baptist Assembly near Asheville for Bible study and training during the summer. In 1959, Mrs. Lasley and her husband became members of Union Grove Baptist Church, in Oak Ridge. In the early 1960's she became involved in her new church's work as Stewardship Chairman of the WMU. In 1963 after a need for a church library was realized, Mrs. Lasley began attending training sessions at the Church Library Conference at Ridgecrest. With other ladies from the church receiving training as well, the new church library was dedicated on Homecoming Sunday in October 1969. Mrs. Lasley served as Director and retired from active library service after nineteen years in 1988. She was honored as Director Emeritus by the church on Homecoming Sunday, October 2, 1988.

Mrs. Lasley was active in Kernersville School PTA during the 1950's and was known as a wonderful cook and an accomplished seamstress. She loved collecting recipes and always cooked enough to share with friends and family. She enjoyed the process of selecting patterns and fabrics and then creating a finished garment, much like cooking.

In 2004 after living in their home for 67 years, Mrs. Lasley and her husband moved to Salemtowne, the Moravian Home. After the death of her husband in 2009, Mrs. Lasley remained connected to her church through visits and phone conversations-family was everything.

In addition to her parents and husband she was preceded in death by her two sisters, Eloise Parrish Lain and Dore Parrish Cline.

Surviving are three generations of descendants; one daughter, Jane Lasley Everett and husband, Jim of Supply; one granddaughter, Heather E. McClanahan and husband, Chris, with great-grandson, Grayson of Morristown, NJ; one grandson, James ""Jay"" Everett, III and wife, Pam, with great-grandsons, James IV, Benjamin, and Zachary of Apex; two sisters, Ershil Parrish Fisher of Laurinburg and Mary Parrish Haviland of High Point.

A Funeral Service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, October 7, 2014 at Union Grove Baptist Church with Rev. Steve Roberson and Rev. Neal Eller officiating; tributes from Chaplain Linda Browne of Salemtowne and Mr. Clyde Glosson, longtime family friend. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Monday, October 6, 2014 at Hayworth Miller Kernersville Chapel.
