Eleanor Agnew Peverall January 14, 1928 - August. 17, 2021
Eleanor Agnew Peverall, 93, of Winston-Salem died peacefully at Arbor Acres on Tuesday, August 17, 2021. She was born on January 14, 1928, in Roanoke, VA as the youngest of three children to Jabe and Beatrice Flinchum Agnew. The commitment to family was instilled early as she grew up alongside her two brothers and foster children her family would host. As an 8th grader in 1939, she met the love of her life and husband, Carl Andrew "Turk" Peverall, Sr. at Jackson Junior High School. After his service in Japan during WWII, the two married in 1948 and were blessed with four children. During their time as a young family in Roanoke, she enjoyed working for the City of Roanoke and in the Municipal Court. One of her favorite accomplishments was helping publicize and raise money for the star that still shines over Roanoke atop Mill Mountain. In 1964, the family moved to Winston-Salem where she immersed them in the City's many traditions and culture including Old Salem, the Moravian Lovefeast, walks in Reynolda Gardens, Music at Sunset, the Arts Council, Piedmont Craftsmen, the Nutcracker, multiple performances at the Stevens Center and more. She was a volunteer counselor at Contact (now Crisis Control) and cherished many wonderful, long-time friendships through PEO, Friendship Force, Bridge Club and Book Club. Knollwood Baptist Church, where she had the pleasure of serving as Chairman of the Board of Deacons in the 1980s, and its congregation was an important component of her and her family's life. As a parent, relative or friend, Eleanor was known to give you her full attention when approached with a fun story or difficult problem, preferring to listen with interest and support rather than to lecture or boast. In her later years, she loved traveling with Turk to visit their children, other family members, and taking their grandchildren on individual vacations. An oatmeal breakfast over the word jumble and crossword puzzle, a daily three-mile walk, a snazzy, brightly colored wardrobe, and love of all things pottery were just a few of her many trademarks. She especially loved spending time with friends and family at Sunset Beach, NC where the family has vacationed together since the late 1960s. Eleanor is preceded in death by her husband Carl Andrew Peverall, Sr., parents Jabe and Beatrice Agnew, two brothers Johnson and Irvin Agnew and their wives, and grandson Nathan Thomas Parrish. She is survived by her four children and spouses, Carl Andrew Peverall, Jr. (Liz), Glenda Peverall Parrish (Preston), Gregory Arthur Peverall (Amy) and Todd Wayne Peverall (Lisa). She is also survived by 11 grandchildren and nine great grandchildren including the most recent addition, her namesake. The family would like to extend heartfelt gratitude to the loving care provided to her by the talented caregivers at Arbor Acres. Services will be held at Knollwood Baptist Church on Sunday, October 3 at 2:00 p.m. in the Main Sanctuary. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions be made in her memory to Knollwood Baptist Church, Crisis Control Ministry or Arbor Acres.
