Elaine Newman

Elaine S. Newman, 84, of Winston Salem, NC passed away Saturday April 24, 2021, peacefully in her home. Elaine was born August 29, 1936 to Fred and Gladys Smith of Cabarrus County. She attended Grey High School and graduated in 1954. Elaine worked many years at Hanes Hosiery, Kelly Office Machines, and later at Amp Incorporated from where she eventually retired. She was an independent woman with a warrior's spirit and a zest for living.  She loved to cook, clean, work in her flowers and love on her dogs.  We will certainly miss her famous chocolate pie and banana pudding; they were worth fighting for! She will be missed by all that had the pleasure of knowing her. She was preceded in death by both her parents; her husband, Clarence W. Newman; her sister, Margaret; her brother Wayne; and her son-in-law, Ronny Whitaker. She is survived by her two children, Danny Ray Cook (Vicky Cook) and Kelly Whitaker; three grandchildren, Ashley Howard (Scottie), Jessica Cook and Trevor Whitaker (Tiffany); and three great-grandchildren, Madalynn Perdue, Colton Howard, and Harlow Whitaker (due in August). The family has decided to follow her wishes and only hold a graveside service at 2:00 PM on Thursday, April 29, 2021 at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens, with Pastor Chris Byrne of New Friendship Baptist Church in Winston-Salem officiating. In lieu of flowers, please make all memorial donations to your local Animal Shelter. Elaine loved her animals and hated to think of any animal being hungry. Online condolences may be made at www.hayworth-miller.com
