Eileen Lodholz Hines

After a life that brought much joy to family and friends, Eileen Lodholz Hines passed away on December 13, 2015 at the age of 97. She was born in Munising, Michigan to Walter and Ella Lodholz. She grew up with her sister, Geraldine Peterson and brothers Keith and Royce. One of her fondest childhood memories was ice skating with her dad because he always took such nice long strides. After graduating from high school Eileen worked at the hospital in Ishpeming, Michigan where a doctor convinced her to join the Navy (""So you don't turn into an old maid like so and so""). So she did join and served from 1944 - 1946 as a Navy WAVES Yeoman 2nd Class. For years afterwards she reunited with her fellow WAVES at places all around the country.

She later joined the civil service and served in France. One of her first acquaintances there, Maxine Cloys, turned out to be another lifelong friend. With Maxine, she traveled all over Europe. Eileen was assigned to the JCA (Joint Construction Agency), responsible for building 5 airfields in France. While working there she met the dashing Air Force captain, Don Hines. In 1957 they were married and lived in Carolina Beach, NC for several years. They moved to Winston-Salem and Eileen joined St. Leo's Catholic Church the next day, where she became a member of St. Theresa's Guild. At this time in her life, all of her activities revolved around her children, who went to St. Leo's school and later Bishop McGuinness High School. Her contributions including being a scout leader (both Girl and Boy Scouts) and working at the Bishop McGuinness bazaar, including coordinating the creation of the famous ""Bishop McGuinness Cookbook"".

She also enjoyed playing bridge and played all of her life, with her latest game occurring just last week. As the kids grew and left, Eileen turned to community volunteer work as well as spending time with her grandchildren. She was president of the Guild (where she was famous for her delicious lemon bars) and volunteered for ""Meals on Wheels"". She was an avid crafter, loved to follow sports, and read constantly; especially in her later years where she often read late into the night. Her family knew not to call her weeknights at 7:30PM during ""Jeopardy""....she knew her facts and always loved learning.

Eileen is survived by her four children, Mike (Melanie), Kathi, Shaun (Altynay), Mary Dixon (Reid). Eileen and Don had 7 grandchildren, Katie, Kerry, Eileen, Emma, Aniko, Azary, and Anastasia; a sister-in-law, Alyce Lodholz (Royce) from Washington State; nieces and nephews-in-law, Joanmarie (Harry) Sims, Kathy (Jerry) Dionne, and Judi (Cliff) Perrault. To her credit Eileen had MANY other extended family members (unfortunately too many to name) who loved her and were truly loved by her…Eileen was the rock of the family and her example was, and is, a reason to Celebrate Life!

Family will meet friends at Hayworth-Miller Funeral Home on 3315 Silas Creek Parkway in Winston-Salem on Thursday Dec. 17 from 6:00PM to 8:00PM. There will be a funeral mass at St. Leo the Great Catholic Church on Friday Dec.18 at 11:00AM. Donations may be made to Crisis Control or the Davie County Humane Society in her honor.
