Mr. Edworth ""Bruce"" Mickel, 83, passed away Monday, May 4, 2009 at Springwood Care Center in Winston-Salem. He was born in Surry County on April 30, 1926 to the late William Ansul Mickel and Ruth Ann Burchette Mickel. Mr. Mickel was a member of Old Fashioned Baptist Church and retired truck driver of 45 years. He first worked with McClean Trucking and then retired from Pilot Freight Carriers. Mr. Mickel served his country proudly during WWII in the U.S. Army and was honorably discharged in 1946. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife Stella Mae Phillips Mickel in 1985, a son, William Edward Mickel, a sister, Cynthia Fettig and a brother, Avery Mickel. Mr. Mickel is survived by two daughters, Jean Whitley and husband Jerry of Catawba and Gail Robbins and husband Ronnie of Pilot Mtn., seven grandchildren, Kim Mickel, Brant Mickel, Angie Green, Jerry Whitley Jr., Tina Collins, Amanda Meadows and Karen Worrell, seven great-grandchildren, Madison, Makayla, Caleb, Lisa Mae, Eric, Bradley and Amber, two sisters, Sena Marie Rogers of Hamptonville and Nancy Stafford of Inman, SC and a brother, Riley Mickel of Rhonda. A graveside service with military honors provided by American Legion Post #290 of King will be conducted 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 6, 2009 at Crestview Memorial Park in Rural Hall with Rev. Melvin Carter officiating. There will be no public visitation. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to; Hospice and Palliative Care Center, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, NC 27103.
