Mr. Edward “Rod” Rodin Sugg, Sr, passed away early the morning of December 26th having spent a delightful Christmas with his local family members.
Born December 29, 1933, in Smithfield, North Carolina to the late Burton Whitfield and Rose Gordon Sugg as the youngest of eight children.
He was a graduate of North Carolina State University with a Bachelor of Science and Master of Science and served in the United States Army.
As a career educator, he taught industrial arts and drafting for thirty years, first in Asheboro, later at West Forsyth High School. Known by many as “Doc Sugg,” he was one of the first nationally certified athletic trainers in the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools.
He was fascinated with aeronautics, building and flying models in his youth and later becoming a private pilot. In his retirement, he constructed a real airplane from nothing more than a set of plans.
His wife and children knew him as loving and patient with a wonderful sense of humor. During his sixty-one-year marriage, he used his artistry and technical skills to craft fine furniture and custom cabinetry. As a member of Trinity Presbyterian Church, he served as a deacon and as a member of many committees.
He is survived by wife, Julia Hudson Sugg; son, Edward Rodin Sugg, Jr. (Teresa); daughter, Martha Virginia Sugg Ebert (Scott); grandchild, Jennifer Zimmerman (Adam); great granddaughter, Lindsay Zimmerman; great niece, Maygen Sechrist (Josh); great grandniece, Sophie Murray; sister, Betty S. Welch of Smithfield, NC; and numerous other beloved nieces and nephews.
A celebration of life will be held at Trinity Presbyterian Church on Saturday January 6, 2024 at 2pm with Reverend Jon Gaska officiating.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be made to Trinity Presbyterian Church, 1416 Bolton St SW, Winston-Salem, NC 27103, Crisis Control Ministry, 200 East Tenth Street, Winston-Salem, NC 27101, or a charity of your choice.
