Edward ""Ed"" Warren Royer was born September 1, 1923 to Paul and Dorothy Munson Royer in Rochester, New York. He grew up in New Jersey and Pennsylvania and graduated from Haverford Township High School in 1941. An experimental year of working on the Pennsylvania Railroad led to a lifelong fascination with trains. He enrolled in the University of Pennsylvania and shortly thereafter was drafted. He served 3 years in the Army from 1943 to 1946. He was stationed in a variety of locations with the 3rd Infantry Division throughout the US and Europe, and was present for VE Day in Paris.
Following WWII, Ed returned to the University of Pennsylvania and graduated from the Wharton School in 1949. He was a lifetime member of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity. He worked in the transportation field for more than 40 years.
On October 8, 1949 Ed married Janet Lufburrow of Keyport, NJ. They settled in Matawan, NJ and Ed worked in the Empire State Building for a time. In October 1951, daughter Wendy was born, and in 1956, son Gregg was born.
The family moved to Greensboro, NC in 1960 and returned north in 1966, settling for 38 years in Basking Ridge, NJ. In 2004, Jan and Ed retired to Bermuda Run, NC.
Ed was involved in Presbyterian Church activities throughout the years, and volunteered for Habitat for Humanity and Salvation Army projects.
After his soccer days at Penn, Ed became an advocate of lifetime sports including rafting, biking, skiing, tennis and his beloved golf. These activities were often the impetus for worldwide travels.
Ed always had the gift of conversation and storytelling. He was a history and geography enthusiast and was always researching new and different topics.
Following a good fight with heart failure, Ed peacefully died, on May 21, 2015. Ed is survived by his wife of 66 years, 2 children and their spouses, 4 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.
