Mrs. Edith Rebecca Shutt Zimmerman arrived in Heaven on June 17, 2017 to meet her Savior. She was born in Davie County to the late Walter Wesley Monroe (Grandy) and Lelia Hazel (Mother Shutt) Sheek Shutt on November 3, 1917, and was a life-long resident of Advance, NC. She was married to the late William Jackson (Bill) Zimmerman son of the late Ottie Daniel Zimmerman and Julia Camilla Frances Sprinkle Zimmerman of Advance, NC.
Edith was a lifelong member of the Advance United Methodist Church. Her involvement in the church transcended the notion of simply a member, rather it depicted a dedicated participant and advocate of all facets of the church. Her ecclesiastic support over the years was a testament to her love of the church and its influence in the community. She loved the choir of which she was a member for some 80 years; she taught Nursery School classes for 30 years; was a church Board Member, served as church historian starting in 1979, and was the 5th generation Shutt member of the church.
Her love of history and genealogy was reflected in her contributions and published works over the years, such as serving on the Davie County Heritage Book committee, being the Advance correspondent for the Davie County Enterprise Record for nearly 60 years, serving as the historian of Advance United Methodist Church since 1979, compiling and publishing the Advance United Methodist Cemetery Book, and authoring Professional ledgers of John Edward Bell Shutt in 2000.
Edith loved her flower gardens and yard and took great pride in identifying plants and flowers given to her by relatives and friends, some of which date back nearly 100 years. She was a homemaker, talented seamstress, and excellent cook. She loved crafts and many of her decoupage pieces were gifts for special occasions. Edith enjoyed traveling and she and her husband, Bill, took many cruises and bus tours during their 45 years of marriage. She was a cat lover and would often visit her children with her long-haired Persian cat Fluffy.
In addition to her parents and husband, Edith was preceded in death by her sister, Ruth Mahala Collette.
She is survived by three daughters Brenda D. Zimmerman of Glen Cove, NY, Adrian Z. Farley of Arlington, Va and Janie Z. Hendrix of Advance, NC; eight grandchildren, Andrea H.
