Our beloved sister and aunt, Mrs. Edith Irene Shatley Johnson, 92, of Winston-Salem, passed away Monday, January 13, 2025. Mrs. Johnson was born on Harris Mountain in Wilkes County on February 12, 1932, to James and Gladys Shatley. She was an administrative clerk for Forsyth County and held a variety of positions including working as a caregiver. She was a member of West Haven Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by the love of her life, her husband of 51 years, Ralph Johnson. They loved to travel and were able to do so extensively before his death.
Edith was a lifelong learner always taking classes and learning new skills. She was a certified nursing assistant and worked into her 80’s as a caregiver at Bermuda Run because she loved her clients. In her 70’s she went back to school to become proficient in computers because she wanted to keep up with technology and in touch with family members. She loved to paint and draw and took lessons to improve her art. Her cooking and baking skills were renowned. She made the best cakes, especially pound cake that would melt in your mouth, and her homemade treats and hor d’oeuvres were always the first things devoured at family and social events. She loved her family and was the matriarch of the annual family reunions.
She was preceded in death by her brothers, Harold, Carl, Bob, and Calvin Shatley; two sisters, Rachel Mitchell and Mary Greeson; and a nephew, Bud Mitchell. She was also preceded in death by three brothers-in-law, Donald Walker, Grady Greeson, and Grady Privette; and two sisters-in-law, Estelle and Lorena Shatley.
She is survived by her two sisters, Margaret Walker of Winston-Salem and Nancy Privette of Statesville; and two sisters-in-law, Mae and Barbara Shatley of Wilkes County.
With no children of her own, she spoiled her nieces and nephews. She showed her love and support by attending ballgames, recitals, birthday parties, and other events. She could be bribed with a hotdog or Krispy Kreme doughnut and summer camp at her house was always a special occasion.
Her 18 nieces and nephews are:
Sandra Clark (Randy)
Annette Privette Keller (John)
Karen Daniels (Chad)
Anthony Privette (Renee)
Rebecca Mitchell (Randy)
